Synopsis: When Al Pacino and Robert De Niro squarer off, HEAT sizzles. A tale of a brilliant L.A. cop (Pacino) following the trail from a deadly armed robbery to a crew headed by an equally brilliant master thief (De Niro). Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd and Natalie Portman co-star.
Review: The often overlooked crime drama Heat is one of director Michael Mann’s best films. Robert DeNiro is the leader of a ring of thieves, while Al Pacino is the cop hot on his trail. This could easily be reffered to as a crime epic. Much like the Godfather was a mob/gangster epic, HEAT is an all-around crime drama masterpiece. And you’re talking about a director that knows crime drama.
The 1080p high-definition transfer really came across nicely. The color palette doesn’t allow for a lot of “pop” on the screen, but it stays close to the source material and is a nice, clear picture. The dolby 5.1 is mind-blowing, especially during the legendary gun battle.
The extras on this blu-ray set include: Commentary, The Making of Heat, Pacino and DeNiro: the conversation, Return to the Scene of the Crime, Deleted Scenes and trailers. Its actually a very well-packed set of extras in a world where we’ve seen a lot of releases with little or no extras to offer fans. This is the type of film that draws in rabid fans of the genre.
I wasn’t going to rate this blu-ray well going into it, but after watching this film again and seeing the nice transfer into high-def and the slew of extras..I can’t help but give this one 5 stars. We highly recommend it!
